Abstract

In the early twentieth century architecture experimented a transformation because of the new technical possibilities and new hygiene and comfort needs which were demanded by society. Resulting in new ways to use the traditional urban block and new kinds of buildings and dwellings. However, many of these solutions although they were advanced and progressive at the time, no longer meet the hygienic and comfort demand of today's society, and its need to be updated to comply with the new regulations. This paper studies the contributions in urban planning, block organization and distribution of space called "rationalist" in Madrid before the Civil War, considering the hygiene and comfort aspirations that led to their appearance. To compare these solutions with the current requirements and show the problems that we have when we adapt them, because of some of the characteristic, typical and genuine values of this type of architecture can be lost and it should be preserved in the renovation process
