There exists structural analysis where the main results are concentrated only in a small part of the structure. The use of infinite elements represents a possibility to avoid an excessive computational effort. The idea is applied in this paper to the static analysis of plate bending. A rectangular infinite element is developed. In this element, the displacements vary according to an exponential decay function. The value of the decay parameter is obtained by minimization of the total potential energy. Some examples are shown in order to illustrate and test the element efficiency. Possible extensions of the method are also shown.
