Abstract

Abstract: The aim of this end of degree project is to give a global and general vision of intelligent conversational agents, commonly known as chatterbots or simply chatbots, from how, when and why they arose until to see how some of them are causing frenzy today, transformed into personal virtual assistants. First of all, a brief introduction to the history of Artificial Intelligence will be given, a chatbot will be defined and the Turing Test, necessary to demonstrate the existence of intelligence in a machine, will be extensively studied. In addition to commenting on the so-called classic chatbots and their most famous competitions, the most important development companies at this time are detailed and all that these "beings" can contribute to the organizations for which they are "working" independently of their nature, showing several current examples with different typologies: embedded in search engines on company's official website, on official websites with animated avatars or through Facebook Messenger. However, technological evolutions gave place to a first update of the chatbots and some years ago were appeared the first personal virtual assistants like Google Now, Siri, Cortana or Sher.pa on which their main virtues or skills will be described and what they are willing to do for us. This project concludes with a real revolution that has come to our county in the last quarter of 2.018 and seems to have no limit, although it is just a new "twist of the nut" of chatbots already transformed into personal virtual assistants, such as home assistants. A tour will be made of the new intelligent devices by the shape of loudspeaker appliance developed by the tech giants, analysing their main characteristics and properties. It is expected that in a short time it will be something "essential" in homes, although it may be a “spy” working 24-hour shifts, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
