Abstract

The world will face major challenges in the coming years, such as population growth or climate change. Faced with these challenges, innovation in plant science will play an important role in providing solutions. The European Union is aware of this, and together with its member countries, is launching programmes to stimulate innovation. In these programmes, Spain is not among the countries with the best results, which are Germany, France and the Netherlands. Nor does it stand out in terms of plant varieties presented. Despite this, Spain has a great scientific capacity, as evidenced by its good position in the scientific publication rankings. Having a good scientific base but not achieving results as good as other countries, leads one to think that it is no being used properly. To improve, Spain must learn from the leading countries in plant science innovation to become one of them and benefit from the results. After comparing the situation of Spanish research and development, it is concluded that Spain will have to focus on stimulating students and researchers, supporting technology transfer and improving research and development funding.
