Abstract

Microwave component manufacturers provide in their datasheets the average performance of their components. To design new devices from these components, it is necessary to know exactly their behavior in the frequency bands and the temperature range at which they will work. The objective of this Bachelor Thesis is to elaborate a series of measurements in order to achieve the electro-thermal characterization of active devices in the microwave band. The characterization will be both linear, through S parameters, and non-linear: AM-AM and AM-PM conversion, characterization with two tones and multi-tone characterization. This exhaustive characterization is essential for the optimal design of the systems that use these components. In a first phase of the work, the brief introduction will be made to the device to be characterized, in our case a power amplifier (HPA); as well as the different measures that can be made to this device. Then, in a later phase, those measures previously presented, will be performed to an actual device. The final phase will present a proper methodology for characterizing RF power amplifiers designed regarding the information given by the previous measurements.
