Abstract
Some basic aspects of supersonic combustión are discussed, concerning the use of air-breathing engines for the propulsión of space vehicles within the atmosphere. The advantages and drawbacks of using diffusion flames for supersonic combustión are discussed. An analysis of the supersonic turbulent mixing process is included. The influence on the flow field of the heat addition due to the diffusion fíame is also analyzed. Finally, chemical kinetic nonequilibrium effects with special emphasis on fíame extinction are treated by considering, first, the laminar diffusion case and, afterwards, a tentative extensión to the turbulent case.
