Abstract

Forests play an important role in the sequestration of atmospheric CO2. Several approaches for
their behaviour at specific situations are available. We used the simulation model CO2FIX v.3.1 for
the estimation of the carbon sequestration potential of common central European forest types, i.e.
Norway spruce (Picea abies), pine (Pinus sylvestris) and oak forests (Quercus robur x petraea),
respectively. The site for our case study is located in southern Austria that is currently stocked with
a mixed-species forest of spruce and pine. The carbon sequestration of rapidly and slowly growing
forest types at the site was estimated based on available data of the productivity, the climate and
the local soil properties. In this study we found that the slowly growing oak forest in this area intercaptures
more carbon than the more vividly growing spruce and pine forests. The simulation suggests that mixed-species forests of this study accumulate more soil carbon than mono-species
forests.
