Abstract
Según datos del ISAAA (International Service for Acquisition of Agrobiotechnological Applications) en el año 2004 el cultivo de plantas transgénicas ha alcanzado a nivel mundial una extensión de 81 millones de hectáreas distribuida en 17 países distintos. Estudiando la evolución de esta cifra en los últimos diez años, las previsiones para el 2010 son de 160 millones de hectáreas de cultivos biotecnológicos en 30 países y 15 millones de agricultores utilizando esta tecnología. Estos datos indican que la ingeniería genética vegetal, está siendo universalmente aceptada y que las reticencias que se perciben en Europa frente a ella no parecen ser compartidas en otros países tanto desarrollados como en vías de desarrollo.
