La huella de las exposiciones universales en el trazado urbano

Abstract

Las Exposiciones Universales no suelen recordarse como eventos que fueron decisivos para el trazado de las ciudades en las que se celebraron. En cambio, la mayoría de ellas fueron importantes acontecimientos que ayudaron a organizar y desarrollar las ciudades de una manera concreta. Las nuevas infraestructuras viarias que se crearon, los edificios que aún perduran en el tiempo, y muchas más decisiones que se tomaron para estas ferias supusieron un antes y un después para la configuración interna de las ciudades tal y como las conocemos hoy en día. Este trabajo realiza un recorrido por las treinta y tres Exposiciones Universales reconocidas por el BIE hasta hoy, pero serán trece de ellas las que se analizarán más detenidamente. Para completar la escasa documentación existente sobre estas Exposiciones, sobretodo de las más históricas, se iniciará un proceso de reconstitución gráfica de cada una de las analizadas y se insertará la misma en el entorno urbano existente en la fecha de su celebración. Posteriormente se comparará la planimetría realizada con la existente hoy en día, determinando si el trazado urbano ha evolucionado como consecuencia de la Exposición. The World Exhibitions are not usually remembered as events that were decisive for the layout of the cities in which they were held. However, most of them were important events that helped to organize and develop the cities in a concrete way. The new road infrastructures that were created, the buildings that still endure over time, and more decisions that were made for these exhibitions supposed a before and after for the internal configuration of the cities as we know them nowadays. This final dissertation makes a tour throughout the thirty‐three Universal Exhibitions recognized by the BIE up until now and I will analyze thirteen of them more closely. To complete the limited existing documentation on these Exhibitions, especially the most historic ones, a process of graphic reconstitution of each of the analyzed ones will be initiated and inserted in the existing urban environment on the date of its celebration. Later, the plans will be compared with the existing one, determining if the urban layout has evolved as a consequence of the Exhibition.
