Abstract

The use of Holi dust (colour dust) is extensive around the world since the popularity of the parties and events with this kind of show is increasing considerably. Despite the fact of its extensive use, its highly flammable nature is poorly known. Currently, some serious accidents related to the Holi dust have been registered. The organic nature of these Holi dust implies a significant increase in the probability to form an explosive atmosphere. Moreover, it is important to take into account the effects on the flammability of the additives and the colourings existing in the Holi dust. To verify the risks regarding the use of the Holi dust in the current society, a previous series of tests has been carried out to evaluate the flammability of the dust. To this end, six different manufacturers of Holi dust have been selected in order to demonstrate the highly flammable nature of the Holi dust. The results of the tests are used to carry out a risk analysis to compare the products from different manufacturers. The risk analysis shows that five of the six kinds of Holi dust are highly flammable, being only one of them almost risk-free. This data intends to raise awareness of the correct safety measures that must be applied in this kind of events to ensure a safe environment.
