Las postales de Rem Koolhaas: preludio de un manifiesto retroactivo

Abstract

Delirious New York es el fruto del viaje retrospectivo que realiza Rem Koolhaas durante su estancia en Manhattan en los años 70. La exploración, que parte del análisis de libros, archivos, y postales, resulta en una de las obras más influyentes del curso actual de la arquitectura. Aunque el estudio de Delirious New York ha sido abordado con anterioridad, el objetivo de este trabajo es aportar un nuevo punto de vista a la concepción de la teoría del “Congestionismo” introducida por el arquitecto en su manifiesto. Valiéndome de una pequeña parte de la colección de 8000 postales que recopila junto a la artista Madelon Vriesendorp, cofundadora de OMA y esposa del arquitecto, procuro emprender una retrospección similar a la que realizó Koolhaas para adentrarse en la cultura neoyorkina de la primera mitad del siglo XX. Con el propósito de desvelar las posibles razones que llevan al arquitecto a formular su teoría, me ayudaré de la investigación del libro, del análisis de estas postales, particularmente las referidas al Rockefeller Center, que suponen una referencia muy clara en determinados episodios de su trabajo, y de otros materiales similares. Delirious New York is the result of the retrospective journey Rem Koolhaas undertakes during his stay in Manhattan back in the 70s. The exploration, which springs from the analysis of books, archives, and postcards, yields one of the most influential works in the current course of architecture. Although the study of Delirious New York has been previously addressed, the aim of this work is to provide new insight into the formulation of the culture of congestion, proposed by the architect in his manifesto. Making use of a small portion of the 8000 postcards that Koolhaas amassed together with the artist Madelon Vriesendorp, OMA co-founder and his wife, I set to undertake a retrospection similar to that of Koolhaas’s in getting to the heart of mid-century New York culture. So as to unveil the reasons that led the architect to formulate his theory, I will rely on the perusal of his manifesto, the analysis of these postcards, particularly those pertaining to the Rockefeller Center, which pose a clear reference in certain episodes of his work, and other similar materials.
