Abstract

With the arrival of the 5G communication technology, monitoring of grid equipment capability is increased and opens new opportunities by enhancing the communication capability and grid information sharing. This thesis deals with the control and performance of voltage source converters (VSCs) utilizing the grid impedance information. Simultaneously, the future grid is expected to be dominated by power electronic converters, specially when considering the large deployment of renewable energy sources. As a consequence, the electrical strength of the grid is meant to become lowered and new solutions to guarantee a stable operation of grid-connected VSCs are of high importance. This thesis studies the cases where the grid is weak enough to put at risk the VSC stability and try to find new solutions to enhance the performance by utilizing the grid information. In this report is shown that some of the control approaches which utilize the grid information present better performance than the one that does not. However, no significant benefits have been found out when it comes to variations in the load connected to the point of common coupling (PCC). It is further shown that one of the control approaches which utilizes the grid formation is more suitable to operate under resonance grid conditions.
