Software development models are in continuous evolution, and new ones are diverging from the traditional requirements-driven family. In this study, I focus on experiment-driven development models and the new discipline of hypothesis engineering. This study aims to contribute to the evaluation of hypothesis elicitation techniques by conducting a state-of-the-art of the existing models and methods in the white and grey literature, followed by the implementation of a design science evaluation cycle as an illustrative scenario. The artifact evaluated is the process of Assumption Mapping, the most recent technique proposed in the grey literature, according to the current knowledge. The results of the state-of-the-art showed how assumption elicitation techniques influenced each other and followed common patterns. The overall Assumption Mapping technique implemented in the scenario achieved good utility, efficacy, and usability. However, the findings also highlighted some limitations and benefits of Assumption Mapping and in the influence of Business Model Canvas in the process. Finally, this preliminary study contributes as a benchmark for future works on assumption elicitation techniques, arguing the need for field experiments and case study applied to existing software startups.
