Abstract

and forcibly displaced people are an issue of great importance today. The number of displaced people has increased in recent years. Reasons are of different kind, such as wars, armed conflicts, climate change, lack of livelihood opportunities, among others.
This vulnerable population who has left his life behind used to have different needs. One of these essentials is energy access. Energy has the potential to improve many aspects of human life, as it is related with health, education, safety, the environment, opportunities for livelihood, cooking and more.

Nevertheless, energy access in displacement settings has not been paying the attention required. Practitioners working in the sector claims that humanitarian energy has been neglected. Not many institutions were specialised on the topic, and there has not been a clear lead to address the energy needs of refugees.

As a result of this lack of focus on the matter, we are facing a problematic lack of data. Humanitarian contexts are complex, and data collection is challenging. But this is not the only problem, even if the data are successfully collected, there has not been clear guidelines in how to process and standardise it, until now.

The Global Platform for Action (GPA) was created in April 2021, as an attempt to fill the gap found in the humanitarian energy sector. This UN hosted initiative has addressed the lack of data in displacement settings. As part of its proposed solution, they have created relevant standardised indicators. The GPA have encouraged any institution working on humanitarian energy to collect and share these indicators.
This work aims to answer this claim. The objective will be to process the data collected within the Alianza Shire project, in which the author was working, and to calculate the GPA indicators with the intention of sharing them with the humanitarian energy community.
