El presente trabajo tiene dos objetivos: profundizar en el estudio de los principios que se mantienen constantes en la obra de este arquitecto, y evidenciar que su última obra construida, la iglesia de Santa María de Caná, es el resultado de la evolución y reinterpretación de estas invariantes a lo largo de su toda su producción. Para ello se toma como punto de partida un estudio de las invariantes de la arquitectura de Higueras, considerando también reflexiones e ideas de otros autores recogidas en textos y entrevistas. Con todo ello se diferencian cuatro apartados fundamentales: orden compositivo, presencia del centroluz cenital, arquitectura tradicional, y desmesura y monumentalidad. Una vez establecida una base teórica en torno a las intenciones de Higueras y su arquitectura, se estudian nueve de sus obras donde se pueden ver estos conceptos. Pese a la existencia de proyectos significativos para concursos, que no fueron construidos, se ha optado por centrar el estudio en la obra construida. Con la única excepción de su primer proyecto suficientemente definido, su proyecto de fin de carrera, estableciendo así una relación entre el primer y el último proyecto. Siguiendo este criterio, se estudiarán por orden cronológico y diferenciando en cuatro etapas: su Proyecto Fin de Carrera, la Casa Lucio Muñoz, el Colegio Estudio, la Unidad Vecinal de Absorción de Hortaleza, el Centro de Restauraciones, las Viviendas para el Patronato de Casas Militares, el Hotel Las Salinas, su Casa subterránea y el Museo López Torres. Finalmente, se analizará la iglesia de Santa María de Caná, estudiando las relaciones que se establecen con las obras estudiadas previamente y viendo cómo vuelven a aparecer esas invariantes en la última obra construida, llegando a entender el incesante trabajo de Fernando Higueras como un único proyecto que se va mejorando obra tras obra en el tiempo. Fernando Higueras, one of the great references of Spanish architecture, is known for the timeless spirit of his projects, as can be seen in his personal exposed concrete structures, always dynamic; and also, for the delicate use of other materials such as brick. The present work has two objectives: to study in depth the principles that remain constant in the work of this architect, and to demonstrate that his last constructed project, the church of Santa María de Caná, is the result of the evolution and reinterpretation of these invariant resources throughout his entire production. To do this, a study of the invariant resources of Higueras’ architecture is taken as a starting point, also considering reflections and ideas of other authors collected in texts and interviews. With all this, four fundamental sections are differentiated: compositional order, presence of the centre-zenithal light, traditional architecture, and disproportion and monumentality. Once a theoretical basis has been established around Higueras’ intentions and his architecture, nine of his projects are studied where these concepts can be seen. Despite the existence of significant projects for competitions, which were not built, it was decided to focus the study on the built ones. With the only exception of his first sufficiently defined project, his End of Degree Project, thus establishing a relationship between the first and the last project. Following this criteria, they will be studied in chronological order and differentiated into four stages: the End of Degree Project, the Lucio Muñoz House, the Estudio School, the Hortaleza Neighbourhood Absorption Unit, the Restoration Centre, the Houses for the Board of Military Houses, the Las Salinas Hotel, his underground House and the López Torres Museum. Finally, the church of Santa María de Caná will be analysed, studying the relationships established with the projects previously mentioned and seeing how these invariant resources reappear in the last built project, coming to understand the incessant work of Fernando Higueras as a single project that is being improved building after building over time.
