Mathematical and numerical modelling for the debris flow propagation from initiation to deposit in the run-out zones is not an easy task due to the complexity of the phenomenon yielding a system of time-dependent non-linear hyperbolic equations. In this study, two different depth-integrated mathematical models for debris flows are considered. The first one is a basic one-phase Voellmyviscous model. The second one is the two-phase approach proposed by Pastor and co-workers in 2017, based on the work of Pitman and Le in 2005. These mathematical models are numerically solved by the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) technique.In order to assess the performance of each SPH model, both are applied to the Tate’s Cairn debris flow that took place in Hong Kong in 2000 after an intense rainfall. The influence of different physical parameters (Voellmy coefficient, erosion coefficient, angle of internal friction) is analyzed in both models.
