Resumen

El artículo explora la capacidad creativa de Alison Smithson para conjugar sus intereses proyectuales mediante trabajos bidimensionales en papel capaces de dotar a su obra de una poderosa condición experimental, visual y artística. A través de la exploración de un documento sorprendente –y desconocido hasta el momento– denominado The Big Scrapbook, percibimos la mirada asociativa y relacional que esta arquitecta desplegó hacia todo aquello que le rodeaba, construyendo un imaginario personal de fragmentos con el que construir nuevos argumentos y narrativas. En el interior de este atlas personal de ideas y pensamientos, la yuxtaposición aparentemente azarosa de recortes de imágenes de tiempos y significados dispares, impulsa la generación de nuevas conexiones y procesos creativos. En estas nuevas relaciones entre los fragmentos de imágenes se puede apreciar el origen de ciertos intereses clave que dan soporte intelectual a los proyectos de los Smithson.

Abstract

The article explores the creative flexibility that Alison Smithson boasted in combining their design interests is presented through bi-dimensional works on paper that endowed their work with a powerful experimental, visual and artistic dimension. Through the screening of the surprising and thus far unrenowned document called The Big Scrapbook, we perceive the associative and relational sight that this architect deployed towards everything around her, thus constructing a particular imaginary of fragments with which to build new arguments and narratives. Inside this personal atlas of ideas called The Big Scrapbook, the apparently random juxtaposition of a series of images captured from varying times and significances places boosts new connections and creative processes. These novel relationships between pieces of images can be seen as the origin of certain pivotal interests intellectually underpinning the Smithsons’ designs.
