Abstract

ABSTRACT The importance of safety in the city and the development of tactics for crime prevention able to decrease chances of occurrence of crime and reducing the fear of crime in citizens must be capital in today's changing and complex society. This research provides a comparison of ten urban developments of the city of Madrid by incorporating quantitative methodology in the CPTED (Crime Prevention Through Evironmental Design) approach, which is designed to qualitatively evaluate projects allowing a valid and reliable comparative analysis of security between areas urban from the study of the characteristics of its urban design. This requires a quantitative spatial assessment system, which evaluates subjective security in urban areas, made ad hoc for this research, giving a quantitative indicator assigned to each safety deficiencies in terms of appearance and intensity of occurrence . This indicators are related with urban design elements that can influence the chance of actual crimes and the perception of (in)security of citizens. To verify what has been exposed it will be tested in a number of residential developments in order to determine whether they can make comparisons between them and, once verified, carry them out, detect areas with worse conditions and pay attention in the most characteristic urban design elements associated with subjective security for each case study. This research aims to reinforce the importance of crime prevention and crime prevention though environmental design in particular.
