Laboratory experiments are an important part of the learning process in engineering studies. In recent years there has been an increasing interest in universities to develop inexpensive and easily accessible lab resources. This paper shows an example in the field of structural dynamics: the design and construction of a small-scale shaking table using free software. The shaking table is a fully-operational low-cost prototype capable of simulating different types of motion: impulsive, harmonic or earthquake events. The movements can be programmed in C++ on an ARDUINO MEGA ADK board.
