Resumen

Alison y Peter Smithson desarrollaron un pensamiento topográfico propio, consistente en una particular destreza para definir la implantación de sus edificios dando forma a la superficie y a la sección del terreno. Consolidado a lo largo del tiempo, este instinto operativo formaría parte sustancial de su manera personal de apreciar el entorno que les rodeaba: una mirada inclusiva a través de la cual los Smithson se apropiaron de la esencia de las manipulaciones artificiales más representativas del territorio autóctono. Entre los numerosos procesos de apropiación, destaca el llevado a cabo sobre uno de los artificios topográficos más decisivos que produjo el paisajismo inglés del siglo XVIII: el ha-ha. Esta ingeniosa manipulación del plano del suelo les permitiría vincularse de lleno con «lo inglés», a través de un intencionado enraizamiento con el paisaje y los mecanismos del jardín pintoresco que sustentan gran parte de sus tácticas de proyecto.

Abstract

Alison and Peter Smithson developed a topographical thinking of their own which con¬sists of a particular ability to define the settlement of their buildings by shaping the surface and section of the terrain. Consolidated over time, this operational instinct would form a substantial part of their personal way of appreciating the physical context of their origin: an inclusive look through which the Smithsons assimilated the essence of the most representative artificial manipulations of the local territory. Among these numerous appropriation processes, the one carried out on one of the most decisive topographical devices produced by English Landscape in the eighteenth century stands out: the ha-ha. This ingenious ma¬nipulation of the ground plane would also allow them to fully connect with “the English”, through a deliberated rooting in native landscape and the techniques of the Picturesque, which underpin much of their grounding strategies.
